BarclaysBank has hired Goldman's Paul Johnson as head of Asia Pacific equities as part of a three-year plan to bolster its equities business in the region.
Johnson, who has been at Goldman since 2015, will be responsible for driving platforms, products and clients in the Asia Pacific region, according to an internal memo. He will be tasked with expanding derivatives, equity-linked financing, electronic trading and will also be responsible for prime brokerage, the memo said. A spokesman for the British bank in Hong Kong confirmed the contents of the memo.
Barclays unveiled a three-year plan in February last year to boost returns by investing more capital in more profitable businesses, including prime brokerage services and equity derivatives.
Johnson will work closely with Christian Treuer, who BarclaysBank appointed as head of Asia Pacific equities distribution in July last year. Johnson will be based in Hong Kong and report to Scott McDavid globally and Jaideep Khanna, head of Asia Pacific, regionally. He will also join the global equities management committee and the Asia Pacific market management team.
