Samsung Display, a unit of Samsung Electronics, said on Wednesday it will start mass production of rollable organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays for laptops from April.

The new rollable display is used in Lenovo's ThinkBook Plus G6, the world's first rollable laptop, which debuted at CES 2025 in Las Vegas, the company said.

The rollable panel allows the laptop screen to expand from 14 inches to 16.7 inches, and when not in use, half of the screen rolls up under the keyboard.

Samsung Display stressed that the new rollable screen is thinner and more energy-efficient than previous models.

The advance is attributed to its thin-film-on-battery technology, which embeds the touch panel layer between the color filter substrate and polarizer, reducing thickness and improving energy efficiency.

In addition to the rollable display, the company also showed a demo laptop equipped with the world's first 18.1-inch foldable OLED display.

When fully unfolded, it has the screen space equivalent to two tablets. When folded, it can be transformed into a 13.1-inch laptop display with touchscreen capabilities, highlighting Samsung Display's expertise in foldable technology.

The company said the new foldable display eliminates the screen crease of all current foldable smartphones
